Savoring Autumn

We are experiencing some downright chilly days here in Salt Lake City. The fall colors are at a peak—the reds, yellows, and oranges dot the landscapes around us. The air brings in that earthy smell with a hint of fire. Sigh. Evening walks now require an extra layer of clothing. I love the autumn months. Every year, I fall in love with fall all over again. Here are some simple things I have been doing lately to savor autumn.

  1. Wear slippers. I wear slippers whenever I am in the house. See my current pair from Target here. More is more when it comes to cozy. Do they look like small animals?? Ha!

  2. Consider a bath. My nightly baths are back! I live for my night routine this time of year as it is so comforting. I love grabbing a book and enjoying a good soak after an evening walk. What a pleasure! Lavender or eucalyptus magnesium salts offer a bit of a LUXE feel.

  3. Add GLOW. As the daylight hours diminish, why not add your own light? Fairy lights are a wonderful addition to the spaces where you like to spend your time. Be creative here! I have also found an amazing candle company—The Growing Candle— that provides seeds for you to use your candle container as a plant pot when you are done. REUSE, anyone? I have been burning the chai scent which is heavenly. They use organic oils too. You can check them out here. I light candles for dinner. I know people who use battery-operated candles to get the same feel. There are so many options! Adding your own glow amidst these darker days can really transform what nighttime feels like to you.

  4. Read a mystery. I do love the accessibility of a good mystery. See my list of favorite mystery books here. I just finished Louise Penny’s latest—and it was so satisfying! What are your favorite mystery novels?

  5. Play coffeeshop playlists or George Winston’s Autumn. Allow your music to reflect the season too. Is there such a thing as cozy music?? I think so! Play it when you wake up or in the evening time as you are doing dishes or winding down.

  6. Make foods of the season. My personal favorites? Pumpkin chocolate chip bread. Apple crisp with vanilla bean ice cream. Minestrone soup. My mom’s macaroni and cheese. What are your favorite fall meals to make??

  7. Add a little fall to your hot drink ritual. Make it a pumpkin spice latte. Or an apple cinnamon tea. Allow your morning ritual to reflect the season too! Why not? What is your favorite fall hot drink at the moment?

  8. Cozy your spaces with blankets and pillows. Make it easy and inviting to snuggle up wherever you tend to spend your time. I appreciate SOFTNESS. Why not drape a little softness about your home?

  9. Enjoy fall walks, with your senses standing at attention! I love the smell of the fall air. I am always thrilled to hear the crunch of leaves under my feet. I appreciate seeing the color of trees and sky, particularly as the sun goes down. Take a few minutes to walk outside. It doesn’t need to be a full hike. It can be during your lunch break or in the evening after dinner. Pay attention. Sink into the experience of autumn. Enjoy the symphony for your senses!

  10. Investing in clothes that allow you to feel warmth and softness. If you live in a climate that gets cold, enjoy clothing that allows you to feel a sense of comfort as you live your day. Warm socks. Scarves. Cozy pajamas. Sweaters. A high-quality jacket or coat. Boots that will keep your feet happy. A cute hat and gloves. No need to suffer. My goal is to feel like I am always wearing a blanket!!

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE AUTUMN MONTHS? WHAT ALLOWS YOU TO FEEL FESTIVE AND COZY THIS TIME OF YEAR? I AM WISHING YOU MOMENTS OF SAVORING THE SEASON. GO AHEAD! ENJOY A LITTLE COMFORT!
