A Few Things I Am Enjoying

Hello to you! I wish I could pop out of this page and offer you a warm hug. How are you coping with the sudden shift in our world? I hope you are taking good care. Of yourself. Of those you love. And of those we may not know but who are the most vulnerable among us. Wherever you find yourself, here are a few things that I have been bringing me joy lately. They are simple things. But then, the simple things really are the best things, aren’t they?

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR…

  1. A Nonfiction Book

The 4 Season Solution is a nonfiction book written by Dallas Hartwig (you might know him as a co-author of The Whole 30 or as a podcaster on The Living Experiment podcast). The 4 Season Solution invites the reader to look at how we live in relationship to the seasons or more to the point, how we fail to! Hartwig asserts that many people default to living in a state of continual expansion or “perpetual summer”— which can lead to burnout, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, and a host of other health problems. If you are interested in an evolutionary approach to life that infuses a connection to the natural world, you will love this book! As always, take what you love and leave what you don’t. Hartwig ascribes to the Whole 30 approach to food, so plan on that. I found plenty of goodness as I read. Just considering how we eat. how we move. how we sleep. and how we connect across the span of a year is an interesting exercise. These areas (eating, moving, sleeping, connecting) are the anchors to our health. And why we should consider syncing our behavior with the seasons is a large focus of the book. I really enjoyed this read!

NOTE—I mentioned reading Untamed by Glennon Doyle on my Instagram account too. If you haven’t had a chance to read this memoir, JUST DO IT! You will not be sorry! I laughed, cried, stopped numerous times in awe, and just generally basked in the beauty of this book. I actually read numerous chapters out loud at night to whoever would listen (mostly John and Clara)! Sharing is caring, right?

2. A New Podcast.

I hereby formally introduce you to… Soul and Wit!! I am savoring each episode, friends!

Productivity Hacks

Most Soul and Wit episodes run around thirty minutes in length. They feel warm and connected. Is that a weird thing to say about a podcast? The magic lies in how this mother-daughter team relate to one another. Courtney Carver (creator of the Project 333 Wardrobe Challenge and author of Soulful Simplicity and Project 333) and daughter, Bailey Carver talk about wellness, simplicity, and what it means to live an intentional life. I love how calm I feel as I listen. No overwhelm here. Just quality conversation. Count on plenty of humor too! Think of it as listening in on a conversation between two exceptionally thoughtful, grounded girlfriends! Who doesn’t need more of that, right now?

3. An Addictive TV Show

John and I are really enjoying Unorthodox on Netflix. SO GOOD. You can take a look at the trailer here. That is all I will say. Worth a watch!

4. A Little Mindfulness Sprinkle In Your Day

Have you ever heard of The Good Trade? It is one of the few blogs that seems to consistently be worth my time. A favorite post lately lists “99 Ways to Add MIndfulness To Your Day.” Check out this post! Sometimes mindfulness can feel demanding or complicated. This list will gently bring you back to the truth—that you can practice mindfulness right where you are.

5. An Important Documentary With Unforgettable People

There’s Something in the Water on Netflix. You can view the trailer here.

Have you ever heard of environmental racism? This documentary talks about industrial waste sites being placed in minority communities in Nova Scotia. The effects are just staggering. Ellen Page (a native to Nova Scotia) co-directed this brilliant film. Expect to be disturbed, moved, but also completely inspired. I will not forget the people in this film!

I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN LOVING LATELY. FAVORITE TV SHOW? BLOG? PODCAST? TREAT? BOOK? I APPRECIATE ALL THAT YOU OFFER HERE. THANK YOU FOR READING! TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOURSELVES. I AM SENDING EXTRA LOVE TO YOU.
