One Small Promise Each Day

I have been following The Holistic Psychologist on Instagram for some time now (otherwise known as Dr. Nicole LePera). Have you met yet? If not, consider yourselves properly introduced!! Nicole LePera is a wonderful mental health resource who produces content at your fingertips! Self-compassion? Check! Awareness around our wounds? Yep! Rewriting our love scripts? Of course! Navigating boundaries? You betcha! One idea I have been testing out recently (from her Insta feed) is making one small promise to myself every day. If I don’t keep it, I skip the blame and shame—and simply move onto another day. This idea has been working wonderfully well for some of my overwhelmed clients who may have striving and perfectionistic tendencies that inevitably lead to a continual experience of self-sabotage. I am loving my experience so far! What an empowering way to approach each day! Wherever you are in your life—the small promise is an accessible approach to showing up for ourselves.

Simple Guidelines

  1. Consider centering your promise around your own health and wellness. Or joy!

  2. Start with promises that take no more than 5-15 minutes of your time. This will increase the likelihood of your success!

  3. The beginning of the day holds unique potential. Use the morning if that works for you. The evening is also a lovely time.

  4. Only make promises that sound and feel good to you. Stay away from “shoulds” for now.

  5. Consider waking up and asking, “ What do I need today?” to help you decide on what your promise will be.

My Promises from This Week

  1. Going for a sensory walk

  2. Savoring a favorite dessert (ice cream cake)

  3. Stepping outside before the day begins—engaging in a few mindful breaths

  4. Meditating ten minutes

  5. Making a healthy morning smoothie (greens, berries, a few banana slices, flax, protein, almond milk)

  6. Putting on a face mask while I read in bed
